We’ve a package of Texas Best Smokehouse Teriyaki Beef Jerky purchased on a recent trek to their roadside smokehouse store in Italy, Texas.
Taste (A-): Delicious! Even though this is a teriyaki jerky the flavor doesn’t scrimp on the savory. You can taste the sweetness well enough but it sits in concert with pepper and onion, lots of subtler spices, and a good bit of punch from soy sauce and dose of Worcestershire sauce. The sweeter flavors hit first and are a real treat. They’re quickly followed by a nice peppery kick that is, at first, a bit unexpected but it adds a really nice bit of flavor contrast that adds a lot to the experience. A look at the ingredients list will tell you there’s a lot going on with this one and your mouth will love it. The flavors are expertly balanced and the overall taste is just fantastic.
Texture (A): This beef jerky is tender, though thoroughly dry, and made of pieces of quality beef. You can really feel the quality in each bite. The meat is lean and cut across the grain making it easy to tear off a bite. Still, this is the real deal so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to work those jaw muscles. It’s a labor of love.
Smell (A-): Despite the myriad of seasonings used in the preparation of jerky, which smell pretty tasty in their own right, you can still smell the aroma of the beef itself. It smells really good and does a good job of foreshadowing the flavor of the jerky without giving away all the surprises it holds in store. It smells great.
Appearance (A): Sporting a dark brown color, this jerky comes in natural-style pieces in a range of sizes. Some are only a few bites, some as long as your hand, but they all convey the quality and expertise that the Texas Best Smokehouse folks wielded in preparing this treat.
Consistency (A-): This is an expertly made jerky. The pieces are lean, cut to a uniform thickness, and with a seasoning applied evenly throughout. You can tell how skillful this folks are when you compare the flavor of the smallest and largest pieces in the bag and find that they’re both equally fantastic. They’ve taken their time to do the job right and it shows.
Overall Impression (A-):
This stuff is so very good. It has a sophisticated sweetness with a peppery kick that’ll leave you wanting more. If you find yourself driving through Italy, Texas we eagerly recommend you swing by Texas Best Smokehouse and pick yourself up some of the good stuff. Eat and enjoy!
